Upright, Chest, or Built-in Freezer: Which Model is Right for You?

Do you need a small upright freezer to add extra storage space to your kitchen, or a 7-cubic-foot freezer for your garage? Whether you're looking to keep frozen foods on hand for daily use or store large quantities for your entire family, JC Perreault has a freezer designed for every need. Explore our different models and find the best freezer to suit your lifestyle.

Freezer FAQ

What freezer capacity do you need?

Avoiding an oversized model is a simple way to keep your energy consumption in check. On average, plan for about 1.5 cubic feet per person for standard use, and up to 2.5 cubic feet per person if you freeze large quantities of food (home-cooked meals, bulk purchases, garden harvests).

  • For 1 to 2 people, a 3 to 6 cu. ft. freezer is usually sufficient.
  • A small family with moderate usage should look for 6 to 10 cu. ft.
  • For a family of 3 to 5 people or heavier storage needs, a 10 to 18 cu. ft. model is more appropriate.

Can you install a freezer in a garage?

Yes—as long as you choose a model designed to operate in more extreme temperatures. Some freezers are rated for use in unheated garages. Look for labels like "garage ready," which indicate that the appliance can perform reliably in ambient temperatures ranging from approximately 0 °F to 110 °F (about –18 °C to 43 °C).

What do people think of frost-free freezers?

Frost-free freezers are valued for their convenience, as they eliminate the need for manual defrosting. While they may consume slightly more energy than manual-defrost models, their organized storage and low-maintenance design are widely appreciated. And when certified by Energy Star, they offer this convenience without excessive energy use.

Which type of freezer uses the least energy?

Chest freezers with manual defrost are generally the most energy-efficient. Their top-opening design minimizes cold air loss each time the lid is opened, unlike upright models, which lose more cold air when the door swings open. That said, regardless of the type, a freezer that is Energy Star certified and appropriately sized for your household will help ensure reasonable and efficient energy consumption.
