Why Should the Dryer Capacity Match the Washer?
To dry laundry efficiently, the dryer should generally offer a larger capacity than the washer. The drum must be spacious enough for clothes to move freely so that hot air can circulate properly.
A simple rule is to choose a dryer about 1.5 times larger than the washer’s capacity. For example, a washer of about 5 cu. ft. usually works best with a dryer between 7 and 7.5 cu. ft. This extra space allows towels, clothing, or blankets to spread out inside the drum, which improves drying performance.
If the dryer is too small, clothes remain compressed in the drum. Hot air circulates less effectively, cycles may become longer, and some items may come out still damp.
Choosing two well-matched appliances allows you to transfer a full load from the washer to the dryer without having to split it into multiple cycles.
Which Dryer Should You Choose to Dry Clothes Faster?
Drying speed mainly depends on drum capacity, hot air circulation, and the drying technology used by the appliance.
Electric dryers are the most common in Quebec and already provide fast drying for everyday laundry loads. Models between 7 and 8 cu. ft. allow clothes to spread out more easily inside the drum, which improves hot air circulation and speeds up drying, especially for thick towels or blankets.
Dryers equipped with moisture sensors can also reduce cycle time. These sensors measure humidity inside the drum and automatically stop the appliance once the laundry is dry, which prevents unnecessary drying time.
In some homes equipped with a gas connection, a gas dryer may dry clothes slightly faster because it produces higher heat. However, this type of appliance requires a gas hookup and therefore applies to a smaller share of homes.
