What Capacity Should You Choose for a Top Load Washer?
A washer’s capacity determines how much laundry you can wash in a single load.
For one person or a couple, a washer around 4.5 to 5.0 cu. ft. is generally sufficient for everyday clothing, bedding, and several towels. This capacity already allows you to wash a large load of clothing or several sets of lightweight bedding.
In a household of three to four people, many families choose a capacity between 5.2 and 5.5 cu. ft. This type of washer allows you to wash several thick towels, a week’s worth of clothing, or a large family load in a single cycle.
Models from 5.5 to 6 cu. ft. and larger offer even more space for bulky items. They allow you to wash a comforter, several blankets, or a large amount of clothing without having to split the load.
If you want to reduce the number of cycles each week or wash bulky items at home, a larger capacity can make your laundry routine much easier.
Should You Choose a Washer With an Agitator or Without an Agitator?
The choice mainly depends on the type of laundry you wash most often.
Washers with an agitator include a central column that moves laundry vigorously. This motion is particularly effective for heavily soiled clothing, work clothes, sports uniforms, or thick towels. Cycles are also often slightly shorter, which can be convenient if you do several loads throughout the week.
Washers without an agitator instead use a wash plate located at the bottom of the drum. The interior space is more open, allowing you to wash bulkier loads such as blankets, comforters, or multiple bedding sets. The wash action is generally gentler on fabrics, which can be preferable for delicate garments, technical clothing, or textiles that wear more easily.
If you regularly wash heavily soiled clothing or prefer shorter cycles, a washer with an agitator may be a good choice. If you want more space in the drum and gentler washing for fabrics, a washer without an agitator often offers greater flexibility.
