Which Washer Should You Choose: Front Load or Top Load?
The choice between a front load washer and a top load washer mainly depends on your space, your laundry habits, and the type of clothing you wash most often.
Front load washers use a horizontal drum that tumbles clothes through water and detergent. This technology typically uses less water and allows faster spin speeds, often between 1,000 and 1,300 RPM, removing more moisture from laundry and reducing drying time. Many models can also be stacked with a dryer, a solution commonly used in condos or small laundry rooms.
Top load washers provide direct access to the drum without needing to bend down. Because the lid opens upward, no clearance is required in front of the appliance, which can be more convenient in narrow laundry spaces. Depending on your preference, you can choose a model with an agitator, which moves clothes vigorously, or a model without an agitator that uses a wash plate and offers more drum space for large loads.
What Washer Capacity Should You Choose for Your Home?
A washer’s capacity determines how much laundry you can wash in a single load.
For one person or a couple, a washer around 4.5 to 5.0 cu. ft. is usually sufficient for everyday clothing, towels, and bedding.
In a household of three to four people, many families choose a capacity between 5.2 and 5.5 cu. ft., which allows you to wash a large load of clothing or several thick towels in a single cycle.
Washers from 5.5 to 6 cu. ft. and larger provide even more space for bulky loads. They allow you to wash items such as a comforter, blankets, several thick towels, or an entire family’s clothing without needing multiple cycles.
