La-Z-Boy’s story begins in 1927 in a garage in Monroe, Michigan. Two cousins, Edward M. Knabusch and Edwin J. Shoemaker, set out to design a chair truly suited for relaxation. Using simple orange crates, they developed an early wooden model with a reclining mechanism, quickly appreciated for its comfort.
Following this success, they upholstered their design and brought it to market. The modern recliner was born. Over the years, La-Z-Boy refined this concept before expanding its product line, notably in 1969, to include reclining sofas, sleeper sofas and modular seating. In the 1990s, the brand became one of the largest upholstered furniture manufacturers in the United States.
Today, the Dayton plant, opened in 1973, employs nearly 1,300 people, where employees are considered true artisans, working with wood, fabrics and leather. At the same time, the company continues to strengthen its commitment to responsible practices by publishing an annual sustainability report detailing its actions related to ethics, working conditions and operations management.
