From the invention of the recliner to its expansion into an international company, La-Z-Boy's story is a true testament to the American dream.
It all started in 1927, in a garage in Monroe, Michigan. Edward M. Knabusch and Edwin J. Shoemaker, two cousins, decided to design a chair suited for relaxation.
Using orange crates to create prototypes and refine their idea, they invented a wooden slatted chair equipped with a reclining mechanism.
Knabusch and Shoemaker then upholstered their innovation and marketed it as a recliner for the living room. The chair was an instant success!
Over the years, La-Z-Boy focused on making recliners. It wasn’t until 1969 that the company began diversifying its product range to include reclining sofas, sofa beds, and modular sets.
In the 1990s, the company entered the ranks of the largest upholstered furniture manufacturers in the United States.
